چکیده

THE NORMAL LUNG contains two distinct circulations of strikingly different origins, proportions, and functions. On the one hand is the huge pulmonary circulation, which originates in the right heart and pours the entire venous cardiac output into the lungs for gas exchange; on the other, is the diminutive systemic circulation, which delivers oxygenated blood to the lungs for the sustenance of its tissues, nerves, vessels, and conducting airways. Vascular connections between the two circulations are sparse and require elaborate injection technics for their display. Among the most elusive of these communications are the precapillary vessels that join pulmonary to bronchial arteries (fig. 1). The systemic blood supply of the lung undergoes a remarkable proliferation in various disorders of the heart and lungs :1-4 old vessels enlarge and become tortuous; new vessels appear and join with the old to form bizarre medusan patterns. And, in contrast to the normal lung, in which precapillary communications between the two circulations are difficult to demonstrate, the enlarged precapillary anastomoses between the pulmonary and systemic circulations are readily apparent. There are several popular synonyms for the systemic circulation of the lung. In this presentation, two of these-" bronchial circula-

Circulatory Changes in Chronic Pulmonary Disease *

With the demonstration by Bing and associates that extensive collateral circulation between systemic and pulmonary arteries develops in some types of cyanotic congenital heart disease,' the question of whether other clinical states associated with cyanosis might also exhibit collateral circulation presented itself. The answer has appeared in the remarkable injection studies of Liebow and associ...

Young Male’s Post Appendectomy Complication of Pulmonary Thromboembolism

The main goal of this report was to share with clinicians an atypical presentation of pulmonary thromboembolism (PTE) in a young male`s post-appendectomy, whom he had no significant predisposing factors for such disease. The case also introduced for re-examining the challenges of PTE clinical manifestations which may mimic other differential diagnosis. PTE is an abrupt blockage of the pulmonary...

Collateral circulation after renal artery occlusion in the rat.

We used angiographic and microsphere methods to evaluate the anatomic and functional features of renal collateral circulation in the rat. By the microsphere method, renal parenchymal blood flow was less than 1% of control 1 hour after occlusion of the main renal artery; 2.8% of control 1-2 weeks after arterial occlusion; and 1% of control 4-9 weeks after occlusion. Radiographic observations dur...

Significance of good collateral compensation in symptomatic intracranial atherosclerosis.

BACKGROUND Collateral circulation stabilizes cerebral blood flow in patients with acute occlusion, but its prognostic role is less studied in intracranial atherosclerosis and appears different in moderate to severe stenosis. We aimed to study the associations between antegrade flow across stenosis, collateral flow via leptomeningeal anastomosis, and the neurological outcome and recurrence risk ...
